A crowd of 164,906 assembled on a sunny, May 3rd to watch California Chrome in the second largest Derby crowd in its 140-year history. Sent off as the 5-2 post time favorite, California Chrome trained by 77-year-old Art Sherman sat right off a moderate pace set by Uncle Sigh and Chitu, and took command as they approached the top of the stretch holding off a late charge from 37-1 longshot Commanding Curve who finished second, Danza took the show spot.
