International Day of the Girl
October 11 is International Day of the Girl, a day of empowering girls to reach their full potential and advance the rights and opportunities of girls everywhere. In honor of this day, we look back on one girl who will live in history books forever - a filly named Winning Colors.
Winning Colors won the Kentucky Derby in 1988, making her one of only three fillies in the history of 142 Kentucky Derby’s to ever win the Run for the Roses and so far is the last filly to do so. We hope to one day see another filly win the Kentucky Derby.
You can come see Winning Color’s blanket of roses on display on the second floor of the Kentucky Derby Museum, along with her winners’ blanket and the program from that year. The garland is approximately 564 roses with green, fabric backing; red ribbon tied at both ends.
