“The Prince of Jockeys: The Life of Isaac Burns Murphy” Exhibit Enters Last Week On Display At Kentucky Derby Museum

When: “The Prince of Jockeys” exhibit will be available to the media during normal business hours, Monday-Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What: Curated by Emory University professor Pellom McDaniels III, “The Prince of Jockeys” exhibit has been on display at the Kentucky Derby Museum since Feb. 1. Using photographs, illustrations and texts, the exhibit of 25 didactic panels explores the significance of African-Americans to the development of horse racing as a spectator sport, and highlights how Murphy came to be known as the “Prince of Jockeys.” Murphy, the first African-American jockey to earn enshrinement into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame, rode three Kentucky Derby winners in his career: 1884 (Buchanan), 1890 (Riley) and 1891 (Kingman). McDaniels’ biography on Murphy by the same name will remain for sale in the Museum’s Finish Line Gift Shop.
