The crowd braved the morning drizzle, to be treated to a clear, but sunless, day. The wind was raw and blustery, nonetheless, the infield and grandstand were filled to around 12,000 spectators.

129 Days!!! 1890- Riley was foaled at John Clay’s Ashland Stud near Lexington, a son of Longfellow, whose son Leonatus had also won the Derby.
130 Days! 1889 Spokane, the second Derby winner not bred in Kentucky, was often referred to as the Kentucky Derby winner that was "bred in Illinois, foaled in Montana, and trained in Tennessee".
