CALIFORNIA CHROME….

“SHINES BRIGHT IN THE KENTUCKY DERBY!” screams the announcer as he becomes the 140th thoroughbred to take the Run for the Roses.

I wasn’t surprised. It was well known that he the favorite. Also, when we were on the Backside earlier that morning watching workouts, a burst of shutters and clacking exploded behind us on the bleachers. California Chrome was making his first lap of workouts and instead of snapping a picture of him on the track, I turned around to capture this [the above image]

Rows of photographers, which should have tipped me off. Alas, I’m 0 - 2 on the Derby picks. Maybe 2015 will be my year. Maybe I’ll listen start to listen to the experts. MAYBE, I’ll pick based on the name again… Third time’s a charm?? Only time will tell.  

Due to the National Future Farmers of America Convention that is held in Louisville during the last week of October, I will not be traveling in the fall. I work with two other Museum employees to plan for and schedule the 18,000 attendees that we see during the course of three days. Needless to say, it requires a few months of intensive prep work.  

In the meantime, I’ll still be scheduling my visits during the fall for the upcoming school year. We have been on the road for 14 consecutive years and only have 15 remaining counties to visit before we see students in every eligible county in the Commonwealth.  

Well, I’ll be back in November. Check back to see which counties will welcome us this school year. Until then, Derby On!
