Our 2017 Horsing Around With Art Winner!

Hundreds of pieces of extraordinary student artwork are now display for the Kentucky Derby Museum’s 31st annual Horsing Around with Art: A Student’s view of the Sport of Kings art competition, presented by CSS Mechanical.

The competition is open to students in grades 1-12 from Louisville Metro public, private or parochial schools and showcases the student’s take on the Kentucky Derby in different artistic style, media and form. This year, more than 30 schools submitted over 200 pieces of artwork for the competition.

duPont Manual High School sophomore Addie Clark was named the Grand Prize winner this week, when Kentucky Derby Museum President Patrick Armstrong, Education Outreach Coordinator Heather Hill and other Museum staff surprised her during her art class to deliver the news and present her with a dozen red roses. Addie’s vibrant colored pencil drawing was judged the piece that “best captured the spirit of the Kentucky Derby”. She won six box seats to Kentucky Derby 143. Manual’s art department will receive $500 in art supplies. Her artwork will also be framed and displayed in the Museum for one year. This is the second time Addie’s artwork won the grand prize. Her submission won two years ago, when she entered as an 8th grader.

Horsing Around with Art runs now through February 12th. All participating students will be honored with a special ceremony at the Museum on February 7th.
